War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Private David W. Moser, 199th Penn. Vols., Richmond, Va., April 27, 1865, in part: "…we are all well that is all the Hyde Park boys that is with me…with the exception of Fret Jones. He was wounded at the 2 day of this month…we had hard times since we started on this campaign but it is over as far as I can see and I…pray it is…the war I think is played out and old Jeff is gone to some other part with the Confederacy in his pocket…he never may come back again…I seen all the fighting I want to see and all the marching but I always was on hand when they called my name…I was hungry and had nothing to eat but it could not be helped…I was no better than the rest and we was all in the same fix…we all feel gay and happy…that old Lee is captured…we left our old camp a month ago today and went over to Petersburg and from there we started after old Lee and at the Appomattox Cort Hous he was taken about 100 miles from Petersburg…now we are with in about 9 miles of our old camp. We are laying inside of the city. We can see the biggest part of the city…on the 25 we came through the city and it is a nice place and where we are in camp we have the pleasure to see the stars and stripes wave over the rebel Capital and I tell you that it makes me feel good but to see that they kill our old Friend Abraham is enough to make a man feel down hearted but thank god he lived long enough to see the fall of Petersburg and Richmond…D. W. Moser." Moser's German dialect phonetic spelling has mostly been corrected. Light stains, else VG
