Apologizing for not trusting sending Brig. Gen. Nathaniel McLean's horse to Ohio because he did not trust the "Old Negro" while also alluding that the delay was caused over the turmoil that Booth was still on the loose following Lincoln's assassination. Brevet Major Henry Bush Lacey [75th Ohio Vols.] writes Gen. McLean, 2 1/4pp. 4to "Assistant Quartermaster's Office, Washington" stationery and 8vo., letter sheet, Washington, D. C., April 17, 1865, in part: "…I explained to you that I had declined to send your horse by the old man and his wife because it would cost $30 to the Ohio and probably $20 more to Cinti…&…because he would have to be reshipped at the Ohio [River] on new bills of lading…I did not believe the Old Negro had wit enough to attend to it. The horse will be kept free of expense while I can find another man…it is hardly necessary to tell you that the excitement in this city is and has been intense since the assassination of the President. Today the persons were arrested and they were taken along the Ave under guard they were followed by an immense crowd which it was almost impossible to restrain from becoming a violent mob. It requires the utmost labor and vigilance of the authorities to prevent an outbreak. As yet Booth has not been taken. I hope my action in regard to your horse will meet your approval. He is being well cared for and is now perfectly rested and 'gay.' H. B. Lacey." The original transmittal cover is included. Near fine
