Photograph, 16” x 12,” titled “Incidents of the War, Battery Wagon, Front of Petersburg, September, 1864,” published in Gardner's photographic sketch book of the war/Alexander Gardner. Washington, D.C., Philp & Solomons, c1866. Credits line includes, negative by David Knox, registered 1865 by A. Gardner. The photograph shows the wagon in which the battery used to power the field telegraph system was carried. there is canvass sign on the wagon “Military Telegraph Hdqr., Battery Wagon.” The textual descriptive page is included with a full explanation. In part, “No feature of the Army of the Potomac contributed more to its success than the field telegraph. Guided by its young chief, Mr. A. H. Caldwell, its lines bound the corps together like a perfect nervous sytem, and bore unerringly to the great controlling head of the army, the wants and sympathies of its members. ....”
