Hand Tinted Print, “T.W. Door. Inaugurated Governor of Rhode Island, may 3d, 1842,” 10” x 14,” in period wooden frame, published by J. Baillie, NYC, 1844. The Governor is shown holding the Constitution of Rhode Island with an extract of his speech, “"The process of this court does not reach the man within. The court cannot shake the convictions of the mind, nor the fixed purpose which is sustained by integrity of heart. From this sentence of the Court I appeal to the People of our State and of our Country. They shall decide between us. Ext from Dorr's Speech, Newport, R.I., June 25th, 1844." The back of the frame has a notation, “Brother of our dear Sullivan Dorr - Governor Thomas Dorr.” the original seal has been broken and print fits loosely in this frame. The Dorr Rebellion (1841–1842) was a short-lived armed insurrection in the state of Rhode Island led by Thomas Wilson Dorr, who was agitating for changes to the state's electoral system. Dorr Rebellion fell apart. Governor King issued a warrant for Dorr's arrest, with a reward of $5,000. Dorr fled the state. Dorr returned later in 1843, was found guilty of treason against the state, and was sentenced in 1844 to solitary confinement and hard labor for life.
