Mounted albumen, 7” x 9”, of the famous Rough Rider in uniform, Captain Woodbury Kane with camp tent in the background. The photograph is ID’d in the negative as San Antonio, TEX. When the Spanish-American War broke out, Kane, with other leaders of society, enlisted in the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the "Rough Riders. Roosevelt mention him in his account The Rough Riders, “When I went down to the camp at San Antonio he was on kitchen duty, and was cooking and washing dishes for one of the New Mexican troops; and he was doing it so well that I had no further doubt as to how he would get on.” He served with distinction throughout the Cuban campaign. For gallant service at the battle of San Juan Hill he was made a captain in the volunteer service of the United States Army.
