This historic Creamware mug, 2-1/2” x 2-1/2,” c1824, was produced to celebrate and commemorate the historic return visit and tour of America by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1824. It has a deep black, decorative Jugate transfer print showing the portraits of both George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Directly above and between those two figures is an American Eagle with Stars fanning out above its outstretched wings; a banner in its talons reads, “LA FAYETTE” and “WASHINGTON” above the appropriate portrait. The Cup displays in excellent condition, with the transfer decoration being crisp and bold and very attractive. The Canary Yellow glaze is bright and bold with a couple of small spots of transfer ink on the inside.
