John Quincy Adams bold signature "J.Q. Adams" on front panel of cover addressed to Connecticut Congressman Sylvester Gilbert in Hebron, CT. Signed while serving as Secretary of State, this was sent from the Registry Office and is side-docketed with the note "Perry's Patent - Dec. 9th 1823 sent the land Warrant issued to Isaac G. Perry & Fanny N. Perkins to the Gen'l Land Office for a Patent." Briefly, from Wiki: John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) served as the sixth President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. He also served as a diplomat, a Senator and member of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. John Quincy Adams was the son of President John Adams and Abigail Adams. The recipient of this correspondence was Sylvester Gilbert (1755-1846) a United States Representative from Connecticut. He was born in Hebron, Connecticut. He pursued classical studies and was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1775. Later, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in November 1777, and commenced practice in Hebron. Gilbert was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives 1780-1812.and was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fifteenth Congress to fill a vacancy. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law in Hebron. This is just the front panel, measures approx. 6.25" x 3.25", has a little roughness at the bottom edge, overall displays beautifully and is a lovely specimen.
