Pamphlet, 5” x 8,” 4pp., strongly opposing president Andrew Johnson’ 1868 Presidential candiacy . In small part, “But it is objected that President Johason told the rebellious States, that if they would comply with certain conditions they would be readmitted, and that the States have complied with these conditions. President Johnson declared that he would be the Moses of the negroes. He has forgotten this, and now presumes to be our Moses, but Israel rejects this Moses II. ... True, the President is also elected, and elected by the nation at large, but he is elected as the Executive, and not as the Moses of America — not as the lawgiver, not as the Tribune of the people. ...never in all history, ancient and modern, has a victorious people, after so protracted a civil war, and under such fierce and thrilling provocations, been so generous as the North has shown itself to the South after our civil war. ...The American citizen must vote in this election for Congress and the Country, or for President Andrew Johnson and his Policy...Will you vote for such a man, who soils the pages of our history. Or will you rebuke such conduct and such treachery, speedily and on the first opportunity offered to you? The country asks you this question. Decide, and vote accordingly. ” Johnson sought nomination by the 1868 Democratic National Convention in New York in July 1868. He remained very popular among Southern whites, and boosted that popularity by issuing, just before the convention, a pardon ending the possibility of criminal proceedings against any Confederate not already indicted, meaning that only Davis and a few others still might face trial. On the first ballot, Johnson was second to former Ohio representative George H. Pendleton, who had been his Democratic opponent for vice president in 1864.
