A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 2 1/2pp. 4to., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., Washington, Jan. 30, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…we are obliged to find our passage on a private boat…I am in full view of the house in which Washington lived…I have been…with Mr. Snow to visit the hospitals about a mile out. We saw quite a number of Maine boys. One was in a dying condition & many others would never be…better…the hospitals are conducted well & everything necessary for the comfort of the sick is furnished…Orin is here…Gen. Stanley is here…he told O. that he had got an extension of his furlough…yesterday we went O. & myself [went] through the capitol…saw & heard some of our nation. They are having quiet exciting times at this time on the subject of arming & forming Negro regiments. I bought a sash in Boston for eight dollars & a half, a belt for two & a half, a wreath for four a half. I shall leave here tonight…shall go to Georgetown…W. C. T."
