Broadside, MARYLAND FOR EMANCIPATION, CONTRABANDS IN THE SOUTHWEST, TREATING NEGROES AS MEN, EMBRACING THEM IN THE ARMY, THE NEW ENGLAND LOYAL PUBLICATION SOCIETY, November 25th, 1863, #141, 1pp. 9-1/4”x17”. This broadside, is a report on the recent elections in Maryland showing a shift in popular sentiment on the issue of Negro emancipation. The author continues to say that this shift in popular feeling is also evident in other loyal states such as West Virginia and Missouri. A report on the destitute conditions of Negro contrabands in the southwest, many dying, women and children for lack of food and medicine, the lack of provisions provided by the Government, the change of attitude regarding Negro troops, pay Negro soldiers their wages and bounties, treat him as a man...by doing this properly they will be excellent soldiers, much more on the support of black ex-slaves, giving them jobs with pay improved their performances in South Carolina. Excellent large broadside. Very fine.
