COBB, Thomas Reade Rootes (1823-1862) was an American lawyer, author, politician, and Confederate States Army officer, killed in the Battle of Fredericksburg during the American Civil War. He is the brother of noted Confederate statesman Howell Cobb. LUMPKIN, Joseph Henry (1799-1867) was the first chief justice of the Supreme Court of the U.S., state of Georgia. He co-founded the UGA law school. The school was previously referred to as the Lumpkin School of Law. However, Lumpkin's name has since been removed from the official name of the school. Lumpkin taught at the law school until the university shut down during the American Civil War. HULL, William Hope (1820-1877). Partially printed with an engraved image of Joseph Henry Lumpkin, the 17-1/2” x 13”diploma on vellum is somewhat dirty. The document is signed by all three founders, Lumpkin, Cobb and Hope, however only the Cobb signature remains legible and that is feathered and light. Still, an extraordinary rare 1860 diploma from the first year of the Lumpkin Law School’s existence. The law school was founded in 1859 by Joseph Henry Lumpkin, William Hope Hull, and Thomas R.R. Cobb. Classes of the Lumpkin Law School, as it was originally designated, were held until 1873 at the law offices of Lumpkin and Cobb. In the first year, the school had 53 students.
