Three pages with dateline Headquarters 2d Reg. Va Vol., July 1, 1861. In part, “Yesterday evening all the scouts returned to town with information of the advance of the Federal Army from Martinsburg. For excitement, commotion, etc. you could not imagine the like. ... The Militia were armed, etc. and the Volunteers placed on the advance of town. All night the sound of marching artillery, etc. kept us from sleep. We were ordered to hold ourselves in readiness to march & had provisions for two days cooked. ... We have about 30 thousand (thirty) well disciplined, well-armed & have men besides, several thousand militia men. ... I will be detailed as one of the Surgeons, should a fight be inevitable, so I have been informed.” VG
