Confederate officer’s letter by Major “Edward G. Yellowley”, datelined Sullivan’s Island, SC., August 21, 1863, 4pp., VG. Yellowley enlisted as a Captain 5/16/1861 into "G" Co. NC 8th Infantry and was listed as: listed as POW 2/8/1862 Roanoke Island, NC., Paroled 2/21/1862 Elizabeth City, NC., Exchanged 8/15/1862. He begins with home news, “I am very glad that brother William has succeeded in getting his own Negroes .. you should go to live with him, our Negroes could be sent with you. ... He informs me that all of the James’ Negroes returned to the plantation ...” Yellowley then continues with war news. In part, “On last Monday, the enemy opened up all his batteries upon Fort Sumter and our Morris Island batteries. It was the most terrible I have witnessed yet. ... They have kept it up every day since then. ... Fort Sumter made of bricks and stone, suffers more damage than the other fortifications which are constructed of sand. They are doing this fort great damage and I am concerned for its walls. ... The cannonading is going on from both sides, night and day without intermission and the face of the earth is in constant tremble ... we witness from our confines, the fiery shells from the contending batteries, as they mount to the stars, disappearing behind the clouds as they pass each other and pausing for a moment in mid-air, then turn and descend with fearful velocity towards earth, chirping like a night bird in its flight .... At night from the light, they give out the noise they make, and from the manner in which the mortar shells are sent into the air, like a boy would throw his ball over a house, they can be easily seen and avoided without great difficulty ... War you see has it beauties as well as its terrors.”
