DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889) was an American politician who served as the President of the Confederate States from 1861 to 1865. Autograph Letter Signed “Jefferson Davis”, 4pp., Richmond Va., Nov. 9, 1863, written to General H. A. Wise, with original cover and marked “Private” in Davis’s hand. The letter concerns a statement by Alexander Yelverton Peyton Garnett who was Henry Wise’s son-in-law and appointed surgeon in the Confederate Army, and placed in charge of two hospitals. He was personal doctor to President Davis, General Robert E. Lee and family, as well as to the families of Generals Joe Johnston, Wade Hampton, William Preston Johnston, John C. Breckinridge, and of many members of the Confederate Cabinet and Congress. Davis , after copying and letter written by garnett goes on to advise that Wise that what Wise heard is untrue. In part, “It thus appears that what you reported as a message received from Mrs. Davis was in fact the remarks of your correspondent Dr. Garnett and made without any conversation with her. You are now made acquainted with the circumstances which caused the friendly message to be sent; and will note the absence of any connection between that and the statement appended to it, relating to myself; and which as I told you at the time is untrue.”
