Colonel Alfred Rhett was graduated at Harvard, was a Colonel in the Confederate Army, and commanded Fort Sumter when it was unsuccessfully attacked by the monitor fleet, and until 1863, when it ceased to be an artillery post of importance. He was a well known duelist. The most noted affair in which he was engaged was a fatal duel in 1863 with Colonel Ransom Calhoun of South Carolina. The manuscript “Special Orders No. 28”, July 17, 1864, Sullivan’s Island, appoints Lieutentent Charles Creswell as Ordnance Officer in the 1st SC Infantry. fine.
