Union Seaman’s letter, 4pp., written by “Edwin C. Stone” datelined U.S.S. Frigate Minnesota, Hampton Roads, Virginia, November 11, 1861, VG. In part, “As regards the informal machine you speak of. I can assure you it is a reality. Already have we had a narrow escape from it. It is now two or three weeks since it came down to us but by some mistake or other, mistook the grappling (which is always hanging to the jibe end, on purpose to stop any such machines before they reach the bow) for the ship’s bottom. Finishing out their mistake and thinking we might have discovered them, they worked the machine ashore when it was carted up to Norfolk to make another trial. We are on the watch for it. 16 men are on the lookout at a time from the bow to the stern. These are relieved every two hours during the night. We now have 3 grapplings instead of one hanging down forward, one from the jib boom end and one from pack sprit-sail yard arm. The Merrimac is also expected every night, and we are prepared to give her a warm reception should she intrude upon us. Every night our pickets are stationed near Sewell’s Point. These are tow boats, one in New York, the other in Providence, R.I. They were purchased some time since and now render efficient service here. Give my love to father, mother, sister and brother, retaining a good share yourself. Hope to hear from you often. Ask me whatever questions you will and it shall be a pleasure to me to answer them to the best of my ability.”
