War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Camp Campbell, Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 15, 1861, to his mother, in part: "…we are kept busy all the time on the fortifications and have but little time for writing…I shall send you a small box of things. Among the rest is a nice soup tureen and cover that I stole from one of the plantations…In am called on to go out on picket right away…D. D. Barrows". VG
