War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 24, 1861, in part: "…we are having a regular overturning in our regiment and who are future officers are to be I cant tell. My choice will be McKinney. He is one of the best soldiers in the regiment and is the choice of the company for captain, but the appointment will be made by the governor. We shall draw up a petition signed by the company and send to the governor…see Leonard Andrews [father of 1st Lt. John H. Andrews] and if at home…[have] him oblige us by using his influence toward the promotion of Orderly McKenney. You can show him this if you chose. If [Levi F.] McKenney becomes our captain we shall become the best drilled company in the regiment within two months. His appointment will be the making of the company…[McKenney was promoted 1st Lt. in 1862 and captain in 1864]…I am go to…bring home a little contraband for Augusta...D. D. Barrows". VG
