War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Jan. 12, 1862, in part: "…we are fortified to defy 50,000men. They had some pretty hard fighting up to Beaufort a short time ago. Our men whipped the devil out of them. Professor [Thaddues] Lowe came here in the last steamer and is to make observations in his balloon Washington. He made an accession this morning. There is something up and I expect there will be some hard knocks between Charleston and Savannah soon. There is rumors that our fleet have cut off all communications with Fort Pulaski…we shall starve them out in three months…we have not been paid of yet. What in the Devil they are waiting for I cant tell…[2nd Lt.] John A[ndrews]. is right on his dignity. I don't have but d-d little to do with him…our chaplain…preached to us for the first time…he has got a hard set to preach to…I am getting sick of this kind of living and if we have got to fight this out I want to commence for…things has laid dormant long enough…D. D. Barrows". VG
