War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Jan. 23, 1863, in part: "…we are now burrowing in the sand on Hilton Head having been relieved at Fernandina by the 7th Connecticut, Genl. Terry's fancy Regt. We shall see active service now…Genl. Hunter has arrived and orders have been read before the Regt ordering the commanders to use every moment to drill…the left wing of the Regt are to go to Fort Pulaski…so our company goes as it is the first company left of the colors…D.
