War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Jan. 25, 1863, in part: "…before this of our leaving Fernandina. We are stationed here at Hilton Head burrowing in the sand…our Lieut. Col. [Horatio Bisbee, Jr.] and Genl. [John Milton] Brannan have been trying their best to injure our Col.. The orders even came to discharge him and take away six months pay but the order has been rescinded Col. [Rishworth] Rich ordered to resume command of his Regt. Brannan ordered to report at Washington and I hope our Lieut. Col will be ordered to report in hell. [He was promoted colonel after Col. Rich resigned in May, 1863.] There is great activity among the troops here getting ready for the fight either at Savannah or at Charleston…we shall be badly cut up as the rebels are well prepared for us…they will never get my pelt without fighting for it…Genl. Hunter's proclamation is all fight and that right off…there will be trouble in this department if we are not paid soon…the more butchered the better…the Wabash, New Ironsides, two monitors, the Susquehanna and a large number of gunboats are now lying here ready for action…D. D. Barrows". VG
