War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on embossed George Washington patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Mar. 9, 1863, in part: "…I have got detached from the company and am now running an engine at the condenser on the dock, 40 cts per day extra…I have got a first rate chance and shall try and hold it. They are building a machine shop and foundry and I calcite to ring in for a job…[2nd Lt. John A.] Kelley…will have to go home. He has been raising the devil and will probably get cashiered…I want you to write immediately and send me that receipt for mixing mettles which you will find in my little [tool] chestI am going to work and shall probably get charge of a brass shop…direct your letter to Daniel D. Barrows 9th Maine Vols, Hilton Head…at Condenser care of King Harbor Master…D. D. Barrows". VG
