War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Mar. 15, 1863, in part: "…there is an expedition fitting out here with great haste…the harbor is full of transports and things are lively. I am running an engine here condensing water. It is a good job but I have got a look for a better one. Lieut. Baxter of the Engineer Corps was here to see me…he says he wants me to tale charge of a shop they are building at Seabrook on the south side of the island. They are building a large machine shop and foundry, iron an[d] brass. He wants me to take the brass shop and send for my tools immediately. I want you to send my little chest…see that my tools are all in it. Lock it and nail the outside of the lid then mortice a little hole in the moulding and put the key in and fit a piece of wood over it…rub a little paint over where you put the key…send me out a good sponge and a bank of kemp for a swab…send me the dimensions of those furnaces that Lincoln used to have…that receipt of mine for mixing mettles which was in my chest…send it my express in this way, Daniel D. Barrows, 9th Maine Vols, Ast. Engineer at Condenser, Hilton Head, S. C. care of Capt. King Harbor Master…this expedition…is going to be a whole sale slaughter…we shall get defeated as Charleston and Savannah are thoroughly fortified. I saw the monitor Montauk after her attack on Fort McAllister. She was pretty well bruised. The fort received no material injury. There are in Charleston Harbor 8 miles of continuous ironclad batteries besides the forts…D. D. Barrows". VG
