War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Mar. 29, 1863, in part: "…I am still running an engine at the condenser…the expedition is ready…there will be bloody work. There is in the Stono River seven miles of ironclad batteries to contend against besides other batteries and forts…we have to work night and day, sundays…making water for the expedition. Our shop is on the dock. There has been a continuous stream of scaling ladders going on board transports all day…Hunter cannot send more than 20,000 men from here. The Nigger Regts have done some good fighting down in Florida. They took a number of prisoners at Jacksonville. Among the rest was a son in law [Robert W. Hughes] of the traitor [formerly secretary of war and CSA General John B.] Floyd. They brought them here and delivered them over to the provost marshall…Bully for the Niggers…it was tough for Secesh but they had to stand it…direct your letters to Daniel D. Barrows 9th Maine Vols, Ast. Engineer at Condenser, Hilton Head, S. C., care of King Harbor Master…D. D. Barrows". VG
