War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., June 2, 1863, in part: "…our Regt has removed from Hilton Head to St. Helena Island about six miles from the Head and nearly opposite the mouth of the Beaufort river…[they are] building the machine shop and foundry there…I am still at work at the old place, but Lieut. Baxter wants me to take charge of the brass shop…I shall do [it] if I can fix things to suit me…Col. [Rich] has resigned and gone home on account of family affairs…[General] Terry is going to take his brigade north. He is north at present…our Regt belongs to his brigade…the government have lost two fine steamers here lately. The Matano and T. F. Secor. The Mantano run onto the fluke of a buoy near the condenser and was a total loss. The Secor was burnt at Seabrook last night…we have but one reliable mail boat running here now that is the Arago…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
