War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Aug. 5, 1863, in part: "…I am still at work in the Condenser…it is a tremendously hot place. I have sweat myself down to about 150 Ibs…everything is going on lovely at Morris Island. The ball will opinion about ten days. Our troops are in high spirits and have the greatest confidence in Gilmore although they have suffered greatly since being there. Some of their wounds are frightful. Sumpter and Moutrie keep up an incessant bombardment but kill very few. Our batteries are within 300 yards of Wagner…deserters that come in say that they have Sumpter already to blow up as soon as Wagner falls…the bombardment will be the most terrific ever known. Dalhgren says that Charleston must fall or every ship in his fleet sunk. Gilmore says it must fallor they will all leave their bones on Morris [Island], good pluck that. I saw Tuck Morrill…he is commanding the Augusta Dinsmore, Dalhgren's flag ship. He looks tip top…Daniel D. Barrows".
