War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], "Camp of the 9th Maine Regt, Black Island, S. C., Dec. 12, 1863", in part: "…the Monitor Passaic sank at her mooring in the harbor about a week ago. They have kept very still about it…yesterday morning I was on picket in plain sight of Sumpter when about daylight I heard a heavy rumbling sound…there had been an explosion. The whole southwest bastion being blown off…one hundred men rushed to the top of the parapet when our batteries opened…there was music for the most of the day. This morning the smoke is still pouring out of the fort probably the burning of cotton bales…Gilmore could take possession of Sumpter at any time but he is at work in another quarter…we get a call every few days from rebel deserters. They state their case to be desperate, nothing to eat nor wear, hemmed in on all quarters…they must cave in. They have not as yet troubled us on our little island although we are within rifle shot of the heavy line batteries on James Island. When Gilmore does commence…there will be some tall fighting…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
