War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., U. S. Signal Corps, Morris Island, S. C., Jan. 19, 1864, in part: "…our Regt leave for Hilton Head in a few days…to recruit, the greater part having reenlisted. Those that have not remain here…I prefer stopping eight months longer rather than to sell out for three years longer for the sake of a short furlough…our batteries keep up a constant fire on Charleston which must do a great amount of damage. I counted twelve shell thrown within an hour and ten of them burst in the city. I am on a station now by myself at…the left batteries near Wagner. I have sentries on the lookout to call me in case of a signal call…I have a fine view of everything…the rebs of late have fired but very little. They are to get tired of it as they find they do no damage…active service will commence as soon as the old troops get back…direct to Daniel D. Barrows, U. S. Signal Corps, Morris Island, S. C." VG
