War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., Signal Station, Morris Island, S. C., Feb. 29, 1864, in part: "…I was up to Hilton Head last week to be examined for the Signal Corps…my examination was satisfactory and I was urged very strongly by the chief signal officer to reenlist in the corps, but I don't like the sound of three years more although it is the best corps in the service. The enlistment closes in a few days and if I make up my mind it must be soon…our troops have met with a serious disaster in Florida. We were repulsed near Lake City by Hardee with a loss of near 2,000 men. Our forces commanded by Genl. Seymour. It is a hard blow and was occasioned by the carelessness of Seymour. Gilmore is sending troops there as fast as possible and no doubt will come off victorious…but Seymour's loss is hard …our batteries send their compliments into the city about every ten minutes…nearly every day starts a fire in the city. It must be a hard looking place…I saw Charles Lemmett's brother at the Head when I was there. He is superintendent of the Darkies there…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
