War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., Signal Corps U. S. A., Morris Island, S. C., Mar. 17, 1864, in part: "…our troops are about all in Florida. There is but few troops here…I should like to know what your advise would be in regard to reenlisting int eh Signal Corps. They are paying $402 dollars Government beside the state bounties although that is no object for me to reenlist, but if this war should last three years longer no doubt but the most of us would have to come out again…not as volunteers [but] by draft. I have been thinking of it for some time but hardly know how to make up my mind. The Signal Corps is the best branch of the service…the enlistment papers close the first of April for this branch of the service…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
