War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Signal Station, Fort Pulaski, [Ga.], Jan . 10, 1865, in part: "…I am comfortably quartered in one of the casemates of the fort. I like much better than at Morris although my work is much harder and not the chance to make money…this fort is situated on a small island which it nearly covers at the mouth of the Savannah river it…mounts fifty guns but is capable of mounting nearly two hundred. It is rather isolated, but at present the river presents a lively appearance, steamers passing to and from Savannah every hour. We communicate by signal with Savannah and Braddock's Point on Hilton Head Island. The station being ten miles apart. One corps of Sherman's army, Howard's crossed the Savannah north toward Charleston and the remainder of the army will start soon…Charleston will share the fate of Savannah. Foster's head quarters will be at Savannah…the chief signal officer says our state bounties will be collected at Washington…Daniel D. Barrows…". VG
