War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Signal Station, Fort Pulaski, [Ga.], Feb. 24, 1865, in part: "…I have not much news…other than the fall of Charleston and Columbia which is glorious news indeed…since the occupation of Savannah and more lately Charleston our mails have become similar to angels visits few and far between…the cable across the sound works admirably and there seems to be no danger of it breaking…we have lately had an addition to our prisoners in the fort by about two hundred making quite a force of Johnnys here now, about six hundred hard looking customers. The old garrison here have been relieved by the 175th N. York Regt. They are Dutch as sauerkraut and jabber like a flock of crows. They [belong] to a division of the 19th Corps lately from Sheridan, have always been in the field and dislike this mode of soldiering. We see considerable sport among them occasionally…Daniel D. Barrows…". VG
