War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Signal Station, Fort Pulaski, [Ga.], Apr. 24, 1865, in part: "…you have no doubt heard more in regard to the assignation of President Lincoln…than we have. The inhumanity of such an act ought to bring the curse of annihilation upon the entire south…I have no doubt the act was concocted by the Rebel government…we have quarters in the fort…formerlyly occupied by officers…the prospect of peace at present is so flattering I may get out of the service entirely sooner than I anticipated…as for the town bounty I am very glad you succeeded in getting it…as it has shown up the d-d penurious rascality of an imbecile sett of selectmen trying to take advantage of enlisted men in the field. If this was to be done over again Saco would not get my name toward filling her quote by a long shot…I shall come south to work as soon as I get out of this…this will be the place to make money although a fellow will want a stock of pistols and Bowie knives wit him…D. D. Barrows…". VG
