War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Savannah, Ga., May 11, 1865, in part: "…I like Savannah very much and should not be surprised if I should at some future time get employment here. They have just commenced, that is the government, repairing the foundry near the old Confederate Navy Yard. It will be sometime before it will be in running order and will…be turned over to private parties ere long…I shall surely secure a job here before coming home…the chief signal officer has refused to have our last two month's pay rolls made out…we are boarding at…a nice private house…in the city…Mrs. Peck is a very pleasant woman and makes everything as home like as possible. Her daughter of sweet sixteen often regales us with splendid music on the piano also sings sweetly …we have not dome…duty on the station…unless the telegraph cable breaks…let me know if ever that discharge paper of mine was received…I sent it by…a 2nd Lieut. in a n**ger Regt…D. D. Barrows…". VG
