War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Savannah, Ga., May 15, 1865, in part: "…the city is overrun with Rebel paroled prisoners, hundreds arriving daily and leaving for different points of destination. They are very civil and the officers are obliged to skin their Reb uniform off immediately upon their arrival. Some found fault saying they had no other clothes but Grover told them they must stay in doors until they got a different suit…they soon changed their taggery…this is a beautiful city and in quite times must have been a business place…I am inclined to think that if nothing unusual takes place this will not be my last visit here…I am very impatient to hear of the final breakup of the signal corps. I have not shook a flag or torch for the last four months …I am boarding with a very fine family by the name of Peck…we just live gay, every room in the house carpeted, a splendid piano in the dining room and a daughter that knows how to extract the music from it…Dan."
