A good group of nine (9) war-date letters between the Barrow family and their soldier son/brother, Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows of the 9th Maine and USA Signal Corps written between 1863 and 1865. More than 28, 8vo., pages, read, in very small part: "…[Biddeford, Maine, Jan. 30, 1863, sister Mary]…was sorry to hear that you had left Fernandina…Topley has got his discharge. They say for incompetency to command a regiment. They expect him home soon…[Saco, Maine, Aug. 22, 1863, brother Dave]…before she died she was perfectly reconciled and wanted to die to end her suffering. She gave away her clothes etc to mother and Ann made presents to the boys and made all arrangements for the funeral, what kind of coffin and who should lay…her out. She died easy and quick…[Saco, July 16, 1864, mother Migail]…I hope you will live to come home…I saw Augusta…she is at work in the mill…I was sorry the boys had to go to Savannah. It is so unhealthy, but you must all be careful of yourselves…write the name of the hospital and the surgeon's name. They cant find anything about Dexter. Don't you forget it…[Hilton Head, S. C., July 23, 1864, soldier Daniel]…we visited Central Park [NYC], the most beautiful place I ever saw, Wallack's theater, Campbell's Minstrels and everything of interest that was to be see on a week's tramp…I shall leave for Folly [Island] on the first boat…[Morris Island, S. C., Oct. 15, 1864, soldier Daniel]…enclosed you will find one hundred dollars…[Saco, Nov. 27, 1864, mother]…I suppose you have received that letter about your town bounty. We will do all we can for you. You ought to have it…[Saco, Jan. 22, 1865, father David]…I recd. from Jos. H. Spencer capt. of the Signal Corps USA at Washington a draft for your state bounty of $300 payable at the First National Bank …we have not heard from Charles since the battle of Fort Fisher. We feel very anxious to hear from him…mother wants to know what present you will make if we can get your town bounty at the March town meeting…[Fort Pulaski, Ga., Feb. 2, 1865, soldier Daniel]…if you get that town bounty give mother fifty dollars and keep fifty for yourself…we shall probably leave the fort soon as the telegraph cable across the sound is in working order again but we cant tell how long it will remain…we had got ready to leave twice but…the cable has broken. Hope it will hold…you will probably hear from [Gen. William T.] Sherman soon…[Fort Pulaski, Ga., Mar. 22, 1865, soldier Daniel]…the telegraph cable across the sound is beginning to play its old tricks by getting out of order often…there are only a detachment of fifty men from the 14th N. H. doing garrison duty here…the prisoners have all been removed also the garrison…it would take a fortune for a man without business to knock about Savannah…nothing short of a good fat government teat will keep a man going right there…direct [my letters] properly and plainly as a part of the 19th Corps and…through Hilton Head…".
