SEYMOUR, Truman (1824-1891) was a career soldier and an accomplished painter. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of major general. He was present at the Battle of Fort Sumter. He commanded the Union troops at the Battle of Olustee, the only major Civil War battle fought in Florida. Autograph Letter Signed “T(ruman) Seymour, Brig. Genl.” on official letterhead, Headquarters Department of the South, February 13, 1863, 1pp., written to Colonel Good, VG. In part, “You will send to some convenient point ... as large a detachment as can be employed in cutting piles and completing them for shipment to the Ossabaw. Eight hundred will be required, averaging 50 feet in length ... they will be finished for driving. The work will be placed under an energetic officer ... as time must not now be lost.”
