A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Hubert E. Carpenter [WIA Cold Harbor, Va., June 3, 1864], Co. H, 21st Conn. Vols., "Camp opposite Fredericksburg, Va., Jan. 18, 1863", in part: "…Fuller…said that my letter created a considerable excitement among the abolitionists and…they call me a Seccesh. If I am a Seccesh. It is the truth so help me God…this war has ceased to be a war for the Union but it has become a war for the damn Niger and if I am Seseh them 7/7 of the whole Union army is SECCESH. You can see the change by the removal of sow of the Generals and putting others in their places that are the same color of the Administration that…of a change in policy. I wish you were out here…just to see the difference in a commissioned officer and privates. Lieut. D. D. Brown [1st Lt. Delos D. Brown] said that he would not be a private for no money…who has got the most patriotism, Lieut. Brown or me, or who is the biggest Secceshinest. I will leave that for you to decide. I don't care what abolitionists say about me…I never have sen as much as one New York Tribune sold here but the New York Herald is peddled by the bundle everyday or so…we expect marching orders everyday…I am sorry that there is so much fighting in East Hampton's peaceful society for there is fighting enough down here…H. E. Carpenter. A soldier in the United States Army…". VG 300-500
