A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., Edwards Ferry, MD, Mar. 18, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…we have been vaccinating today. I think they have all been through with it…Washington…was perfectly disgusting…all the way from Chain Bridge to Georgetown was lined with drunken men and officers, some on foot hardly able to walk reeling & plunging into the mud, others…were on horse back hardly able to hang on. The city of W is filled with shoulder straps…from major generals to second lieutenants…I recd a letter from C….he says they are building corduroy roads…they have taken quite a number of Rebel prisoners in this vicinity…in one house they found two Rebel officers secreted. The man in whose house they were found has been tried and will be shot. His case being considered…furnishing aid & comfort to the enemy…the Rebel officers taken are to be tried & if found to be spies…will be shot…W. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. Near fine.
