A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., Muddy Branch, MD, May 3, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…I came down here…to see a man in Co. K which is Capt. Stanley's Co. of Porter. The sick man Lieut. Stacey was moved from camp to this house…I found him in very bad condition with most violent headache threatened with congestion of brian. I affixed ice to his head & blisters to the extremities, gave him calomel followed by salts. Under this treatment he has improved and this morning feels much better. I am a little careful in dressing the blisters not to dress the same one twice …this is a very nice family where I am stopping…they have about a dozen slaves who fare as well…as their masters. Yesterday they were planting cotton & corn. Today they are dressed up in fine clothes & spend the time as best suits them. They raise a great many peaches. The trees are now in full blossom…the old gentleman here says he has raised twelve children all of whom are now living. The older ones are married and settled…near him while he has some five or six at home…they have never tried to raise cotton here before this year. They are sowing a great deal of flax to take the place of cotton. They raise considerable of it last year and many of them are now weaving cloth made from it…W. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
