A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., "Camp near Chain Bridge," May 15, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…the wind blew furiously all last night shaking our tents in a manner which threatened…to bring down over our heads. I occupy a tent…now in line of the staff officers with Dr. Sweet above & the steward below…they have had considerable excitement at the Ferry since we left consequent on some…rifle pits thrown up across the river in Virginia. Men were seen digging & then quite a number were seen coming toward the spot of the supposed pits. Our men could wait no longer…commenced shelling furiously when the supposed rebs took to their heels. Soon after some of our men went over to reconnoiter and…they found a grave with the corpse of a negro beside it. The whole turning out to be a negro funeral; a pretty good joke on our folks…W. C. Towle." VG
