A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., "Camp near Chain Bridge," May 20, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…you spoke about Dr. Sweet sending his orders in relation to the movement…he sent no orders and did not know we were going to move…until after we started…I was obliged the first night to take forcible possession of a house…the man being unwilling to give up any part of it for our sick men. I told him that two rooms I…should have at all events and put my men into them accordingly…I told him I could sleep anywhere but sick men must have comfortable quarters if they were to be had. I get along very well with Dr, Sweet, have no trouble at all. Dr. Wiggins of Auburn, the surgeon general of Maine, has been with us two days, left this morning. He thinks our hospital is in very fine condition & the health of the Regt. good. I am going…to visit the Patent office, Smithsonian Institute and other places of interest…I was interrupted…this forenoon by the appearance of Will Bradley, Mrs. Perley & Mrs Fessenden. They came up…in a splendid carriage drawn by beautiful dark horses. They stopped about a half hour…W. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
