A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., Edwards Ferry, MD, Apr. 30, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…this is the day appointed by the Pres. for National Fast. It is also our day for general inspection…the paymaster is here…he vamp with a four horse team escorted by a Co. of cavalry. His approach was greeted by the men with tremendous & prolonged cheering. It has a remarkable, exhilarating effect upon the men reviving the drooping spirits…as only 'greenbacks' can do…two sick men home. They were Dr. Sweet's patients…I prepared some med. for one of them (diarrhea chronic) which he thought at the time helped him. The next time Sweet…prescribed something different…Walker told me that he carried my Med. home with him and the old doctor there ordered the same…he is nearly well…last night we saw a small encampment of rebels across the river. It is probably a small foraging party who will not venture to fight unless attacked first…all the houses which we can see are deserted by white people…the negroes have full possession, carrying on the farms as best they can . They have nothing except wheat…being cut off from all supplies…W. C. Towle." The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
