Union soldier’s four page letter written by “Ted”, datelined Acquai, Va., Mar. 26, 1863. In part, “Met Gen. Meagher’s Adjt. Genl. this morning, who informed me another Cavalry expedition of some 6,000 men with two Battalions, had started out towards Kelly’s Ford. Of this details I expect soon to learn - some more in vicinity of Culpepper. ...Tomorrow they say is to see another grand gala day at the front. Princess Salm Salm has challenged Gen. Averill, Gen Meagher and some other officers to a finale race near Gen. Birney’s Head Quarters - with an effort to win from the “Shamrock Hero”, his honors won on St. Patrick’s Day.... Those who saw the Princes handsome little wife, leap the hurdles and ditches near Meagher’s Head Quarters the day after the grand fete. They say she will out strip her competitors in the coming race. ... The “Princess Salm Salm” is said to be one of the lands handsomest women in America. The Prince I believe is a Prussian and an officer upon Gen. Hookers Staff. Morally speaking I cannot form an opinion. I know “Sickles” & others of that strip to call her personal friends have seen them together often going and returning from Washington. I shall have to go witness this novelty which place right under the enemy’s guns and within range. ....”
