First, “Break it Gently to my Mother Song and Chorus,” Boston, 1863, 4pp., disbound, VG. On the front cover is the inspiration; “This ballad was suggested by the following incident. On the battle-field of Gettysburg, among many of our wounded soldiers was a young man the only son of an aged mother. Hearing the surgeon tell his companions that he could not survive the ensuing night, he placed his hand upon his forehead, talking continually of his mother and sister, and said to his comrades assembled around him, ‘Break it gently to my mother.’” ...plus, Music Sheet, “Mother Would Comfort Me, Boston 1863, 6pp, disbound, VG. On the inside cover is the inspirational story; “NOTE.--A Soldier in one of the New York regiments, after being severly wounded, was taken prisoner; and after lying in the hospital for a number of days, he was told by those who were in attendance that ‘they could do no more for him,’ that he must die. For a few moments the poor fellow seemed in deep thought; reviving a little, he turned slowly toward those near him, and after thanking them for the kind manner in which they had treated him during his sickness, a sweet smile passed over his pale face, and with a firm voice he said, ‘MOTHER WOULD COMFORT ME, IF SHE WERE HERE.’ Those were his last words.
