This eight page letter is datelined Camp Gray, near Fairfax, Virginia, April 6, 1863, retains the original cover and is written to his brother. In part, “We went to a small town called Aldie .. where we drove the Rebels the previous day. ... some went out scouting to see what we could find .. our company caught two horsess, 20 chickens besides alot of corn and hay for the horses ... We came to this town - Middleburg. There we ransacked the town. ... This town Middleburg we was ordered to haly every man and inquire their business and if he did not, shoot them down. ... There was one of our men shot. .. they saw 8 rebels ... took after them. The other corporal was wounded .. We expected a brush with rebs...we could not findhide or hair of them as we passed the man that they shot. It looked hard. They has stripped him of everything but his shirt and pants. they got his horse and arms. ... some on hit them for they found a dead Rebel and one wounded ... we took some 50 prisoners ....”
