Union soldier’s letter written by “R(obert) F. Taylor who enlisted 4/25/1861 at Rochester, NY as a Captain into A" Co. NY 13th Infantry receiving his last promotion to Colonel 11/19/1863, 1st NY Veteran Cavalry. The six page letter is datelined Cumberland MD. July 11, 1864 and reads in part, “We are boxing around Virginia and Maryland ... I have no doubt that you are anxious to hear something about our raid ... next morning I found myself in command of 300 infantry and about 200 cavalry and a small trin with orders to report to Gen. Hunter ... arrived the evening of the battle of Peidmont ... the second day I was placed in command of the brigade ... we run into a large body of the enemy ... the Major in command, five officers and thirty men were captured ... captured a wagon train containing ... about $2,000,000 in Confederate money ...”
