Union soldier’s letter written by “Sam(uel B. Pierce) who enlisted on 8/19/1862 into C company, 6th NY Heavy Artillery and is accompanied by the original cover. The four page letter is datelined November 14th, 1864, In Camp Near Winchester, Va. The letter states in part, “You know the Johnnies kindly relieved us of our camp equipage on the 19th, and the Government has not furnished with any since, but I presume that we will get them before long. ... Did I tell you in my last that when we found Rasberry the night of the fight that the Rebs had cut every button off of his jacket and even cut his shoulder straps off… the villains. ... Our Cavalry had a little skirmish the other day and captured a Major, several line Officers and about 200 men. ... Winchester is a very strong Secesh place. What sour looks the women give us whenever we go through the streets, and many a remark issues from their lips not meant for our good. ...”
