Union soldier’s letter written by “M. E. Richards” who enlisted on 9/23/1861 into PA 96th Infantry. The two page penciled letter has its original cover and is datelined Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, May 13, 1864. In part, “We have altogether nine days of desperate fighting - very bitter - fighting everyday. ... we have lost nearly half of our brigade of 1200 killed wounded missing ... there were very few of our men taken prisoner. ... The army has lost heavily this campaign in men and officers and quite a large number of Generals. Gen. Sedwick commanding the 6th Corps. among the number...great confidence is felt in General Grant ...”
