War-date Naval Department partly-printed, 1p. 4to., document signed by Secretary of the Navy GIDEON WELLES, Washington, April 4, 1864, ordering Assistant Surgeon James H. Macomber to report to the U. S. Naval Asylum in order to take an examination. He originally entered the navy as Asst. Surgeon in July 1861 and was subsequently promoted, on July 30, 1864, after appearing for the above mentioned exam. He died while in the service on February 18, 1865. Endorsed and updated numerous times by surgeons and president of the examining board. Sold with a finely engraved portrait of Secretary Welles published by G. P. Putman, New York. Minor toning, else VG. (2 pieces).
